It is a night with the girls, good eats, and book talk! Who could ask for more? Our group is a quirky bunch of teachers and retired teachers. We would gladly welcome other readers of different professions but haven’t had any luck so far.
We warm up the conversation by checking in on each other’s lives and sometimes just how our day went. Plates filled with food comes next. “Mmm…what is in this? Could I have the recipe?” More warm up conversation follows. Then Julie always has a lead line to direct the conversation to the book. She wasn’t assigned this “job” but has just taken on that role. Laughter as we realize that she is subtly directing us to the purpose of our meeting…discuss a book. We do not use a set of questions although we have before. We discuss the lives of the characters in the story. We might talk about the author’s writing. We mention other books we are reading. Sometimes we get off topic but there is always the best part. The story read always leads to stories of our lives and that is what matters.
