Do you remember the game Six Degrees from Kevin Bacon that people talked about in the nineties? The premise was that you could connect any actor/actress to Kevin Bacon in six steps or less. As I was watching the Oscars I was reminded of this trivia game. Actors and movie support people were accepting their awards. Most of these movies began from a book. The movies would not be existence if it wasn’t for a writer and his story. I wonder why the Academy doesn’t invite the authors of the books. Look at the nominees for Best Picture…from a book. Younger students are always surprised that some of their favorite movies were a book first. My favorite “reveal” to kids is Shrek by William Steig. Most of them never realize that the movie is based on a book. Six degrees to Kevin Bacon? Kevin, we are all connected to a book by less degrees than six. We are all connected to our daily reading lives and in less than six degrees.
My daughter was married last September. Her engagement was very short…three months! You can imagine her scramble to plan a wedding in such short notice. Venues are difficult (especially if you’re anti-wedding) to find and often are booked months in advance and can be expensive. She called and asked if I could make a trip to check out what she had “found”. Jen met Elizabeth through a book club…became friends through many book club discussions…engagement…farm in Elizabeth’s family…beautiful wedding venue from a book connection. Less than six degrees.
